Elly Okinyo
I'm an economist based in Helsinki. I work with time series, labour-market and remittance data, and I care about getting the method right and then explaining it plainly. I hold a Research Master's in Economics from the University of Helsinki, where my thesis tested whether Google Trends improves Bitcoin volatility forecasts.
How I work
- Method first. I choose the model to fit the question and the data, benchmark it against something simple, and report when the fancy option doesn't win.
- Reproducible by default. Code, data steps and outputs live in version control so anyone can rerun every table, as with my thesis repo.
- Plain-language results. I write up what the numbers mean for a decision, with the uncertainty stated, not just the coefficients.
Research interests
Labour markets, especially how downturns hit different groups. In Finland, unemployment among people of foreign background aged 20–64 was 16.7% in 2024, against 6.6% for people of Finnish background (Statistics Finland). Remittances and household finance, with a focus on Kenya's diaspora inflows and what drives them. Time-series econometrics and forecasting: volatility models, forecast evaluation, and when machine learning helps and when it doesn't.
